The Armourers & Brasiers' Company is now one of the leading charities in the UK supporting metallurgy and materials science. Grants are made from the Armourers & Brasiers' Gauntlet Trust, on the advice of the Company's Materials Science Committee.

Encouraging an interest in basic science.

  • Assistance with science equipment and projects in primary and secondary schools.
  • Physics teachers update courses.
  • Tower of London Schools Science Project.

Introducing materials science to teachers and pupils.
  • Support for the development of materials elements in schools’ science curricula.
  • Establishing links between sixth-forms and university materials science departments to draw more students into the discipline.
  • In association with Corus, sixth-form scholarships which continue into undergraduate level for those who go on to study materials science at one of 11 universities (Birmingham, Cambridge, Imperial, Leeds, Liverpool, Loughborough, Manchester, Oxford, Queen Mary London, Sheffield and Wales, Swansea).
  • In association with Corus, an Apprenticeship Awards Schemes
  • Summer schools on the 'Science of Materials' for chemistry teachers
  • 'Master Classes': residential courses on academic and industrial aspects of materials for science and technology teachers
  • Industrial experience for science teachers at Corus plants
  • Materials science component in Salters' Chemistry Camps for 15 year-olds
  • Sixth-Form Link Scheme for school works experience at Corus plants
  • Summer Schools in Materials for sixth-formers at Birmingham University
